What’s a homophone? Homophone is made of two Latin words; homo means the same and phone has something to do with the sound. So, a homophone means a word that is pronounced the same as another word but has a different meaning or spelling, or both.

Chilly and chili are homophones – they sound the same but have a totally different meaning. Chilly means a bit cold and chili is a pepper.

Other homophones are:

• to – two – too

• meet – meat

• buy – by – bye

• wear – where

• there – they’re – their

• sweet – suite

Can you think of another homophone?
